Vista Basic is just a replica of Windows XP with a changed look. You need to upgrade your version to get the snipping tool and other important utilities that your basic edition is missing for sure. Earlier we used to press Alt-PrintScreen to get the screenshot. The conventional method provided the hazy screenshot of full PC screen. But the Snipping Tool can take full-screen, particular window, any rectangle or free-form "snips" of your screen and open it in an editor. There you can highlight parts of the screenshot and draw on it with a free form pen of different colors, thickness and tip styles. The tutorial aims to let you know how to turn it on and if the snipping tool is not available to you then how to get it.
To upgrade it navigate to help: Open Control Panel and launch Windows Anytime Upgrade. At the bottom of the window, click Compare versions for details. You can easily compare and find out what all features do you need against those that you can upgrade to.

Other version of Vista have the screen capture utility.Just navigate to:
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Snipping Tool.

If you don't see it there, it may not be activated. To activate it navigate to-

1) Control Panel and then Open Program and Features (you may have to click Programs first).
2) Click Turn Windows features on or off, in the task pane on the left.
3) Click Continue when prompted by UAC (User Account Control).
4) You will notice a list of features, check the box next to Tablet PC Optional Components, and click OK.

Turning on these features gives you not only the Snipping Tool, but also the Tablet PC Input Panel, Windows Journal, and other stylus-related features. Now you can enjoy taking screenshots without buying expensive softwares like SnagiIt., though Snagit has many other features that may not be available with snipping tool.
